MCBA/  Jerome Book Arts Mentorship Series IV

October 2012 - November 2013 - I was selected to take part in the Jerome Book Arts Mentorship program through the MN Center for Book Arts. Over the year long program, I embarked on an investigation of new artistic disciplines and one-on-one work with an artist mentor to develop an individual project incorporating book arts and photography.

Art and Photographic:

Deck the Walls, Roseville/Bloomington,  8/2013 - 7/2014 Custom frame designing and retail art sales with emphasis on local artists.

Brass & Bellows, Marine on St. Croix, 12/2012 - 12/2013. Brass & Bellows was my own studio/  gallery where I offered one of a kind historic photo services. I specialized in workshops, tintype portraits, and custom alternative printing. I also curated two unique and successful shows of current alternative photographic practices.

Workshop Instructor,  Minneapolis Photo Center, 7/2012 - 8/2013. Alternative photographic technique workshop instructor focusing on the salted paper and photo polymer processes. Workshops cover digital negative production, chemistry and safety, and final print production/exposure and processing.   www.mplsphotocenter.com

Visiting Artist/Teaching Assistant, College of Visual Arts, 2010, 2012.  At the invitation of John Marshall, Photography Chair, I filled the role of a teaching assistant/visiting artist for the Alternative Processes Class. I gave demonstrations and assisted the photography majors conceptually, as well as technically, and worked with John to improve the curriculum. I introduced the salted paper process to the course, and a new gum bichromate technique, also arranging for a visiting artist to give a talk and lead a process demonstration.

Procolor, Photo Lab Tech, 1999-2000. Custom and machine color print technician. Large custom prints, and high volume machine print runs using a Hostert Fotomat bar code printer for national chain clients.

Olausen Studio, Assistant, Summer 1997. Working with Judy Olausen for my BFA thesis project, I assisted her after graduation. Duties: Moving, setting up, and taking down of gear, dismantling and reconstructing a large scale set, helping her light the same set, and film loading.

D. Molnar Photography, Photographer. 1995-97. For these three years I worked with customers on a variety of different freelance jobs.

College of Visual Arts, Lab Tech. 1995-97. While attending classes I volunteered my time to the school. Duties included: Darkroom cleaning and maintenance, chemistry preparation and disposal. I also gave demonstrations to underclassmen in the use of studio equipment, cleaning and loading of 4x5 film, large or medium format cameras, strobe equipment, and processing and printing.

Restaurant and Management:

Minnesota Zephyr, Kitchen Manager, 2000 - 2005. All day-to-day kitchen operations of a large volume, 4 star restaurant; hiring, firing, scheduling, inventory, and cost control and customer service.

Dock Cafe, Asst. Kitchen Manager, Cook, 1993-97. Daytime line cook and supervisor. Duties included: Delegation of tasks, inventing daily specials and soups du jour, ordering and discipline.

Carbones Pizza, Manager, 1989-92. Duties included: Scheduling, cooking, ordering, inventory, cost control, opening, closing, closing out register and making bank deposits, customer service.

Labor and Customer Service:

Mike Fredricksen Painting, painter, 2007 to 2011 When needed and available I helped my friend Mike who owned his own painting and prefinishing company. Light wall repair including mudding and sanding; paint prep including taping, cutting, staining, and rolling.

Crossroads Performance, Shop, assembly, packaging, 2006 to 2008 A custom motorcycle parts machine shop where I did shipping, receiving, packaging and delivery, as well as running CNC machines and motorcycle mechanics.

Kuryakyn, Technical support, 2005 to 2006 An aftermarket motorcycle parts supplier, I worked phone support assisting customers with installation problems, as well as taking order and general customer service.
